Is It Time For A New Thermostat?

Your Thermostat And You

Whether you want to heat your home to get cozy for the winter or crank up the cool air to beat the summer heat, your thermostat is at the center of your home’s temperature control. While your classic thermostat is pretty straightforward to operate, whether digital or analog, you might be unaware that upgrading your thermostat can benefit you.

From energy efficiency to saving money, upgrading your thermostat is a wise investment. The question is, though, when should you upgrade your thermostat? If the old one works fine, there isn’t a need for an upgrade, right? Well, not exactly, and here is why.

Uneven Temperature Across Your Home

Nothing is more annoying than having an appliance that wants to follow its own rules. If you turn on your thermostat to get a pleasant room temperature of 68 degrees but feel your home is a lot cooler than 68, something is wrong. It is always wise to check your HVAC system first to ensure no issues with ventilation or even a broken component, but if your HVAC system is fine, the culprit is your thermostat.

A broken thermostat can sometimes raise or lower temperatures several degrees away from the temperature you set. Not only is this issue annoying, but it can be a wallet drainer as you constantly have to adjust your thermostat.

Moody Temperature

Not only can an old thermostat heat and cool your home inefficiently, but it can also have quite the attitude and cause sudden shifts in temperatures. Older thermostats can cause your HVAC system to switch gears despite what you set it to earlier suddenly.

HVAC System Has Issues Turning On Or Off

Oddly enough, your HVAC system can be fully operational aside from your thermostat, but if that thermostat is broken, you’re going to run into the annoying problem of your HVAC system possibly not turning on or off. A broken thermostat can have faulty components that will not correctly signal your HVAC system and lead to a house that will not heat up or cool down. Not only is this costly, but it is frustrating.

Your HVAC System Turns Off Prematurely

Isn’t this just the same issue as the one above? Not exactly. Your HVAC system can be fine getting started, but your thermostat may be to blame if you notice that your HVAC system is short cycling more frequently than before. A short cycle, in simple terms, is your HVAC system turning off before it can properly heat or cool your home.

A short cycle will lead to uneven temperatures in your home and put additional strain on your HVAC system. The longer this issue persists, the higher your bills will be down the line.

Your Thermostat is Outdated

Nothing is wrong with analog technology, but you should probably switch to digital when it comes to your thermostat. While analog thermostats can function adequately with proper care, they are not as energy efficient as digital thermostats.

Cranking that dial is not as accurate as the marking on the knob may indicate, and you may be setting your thermostat a few degrees higher or lower than you think. At the same time, this can add a few extra dollars to your energy bill; over time, that adds up. So why not save money and avoid that issue by getting a digital thermostat that you can program and save money using?
